Last Friday was in fact a great day in the history of the world. Why? It's the day I was born. (hey, I wasn't born with all of this humility either, I've had to work at it.)
However, for this particular year the day also provided to be an independence day of sorts as well. I finally was completely rid of a parasitical lesion that had been destroying me for the last 5 years.
I tend to draw random parallels to things in life. I offer a clip from one of my favorite movies which will identify how I feel about the independence portion of the day. The clip will randomly go along with the rest of what I have to say below.
This reminded me of a story:
In the late 1970’s, two teenagers from Scotland, were courting each other. As their relationship grew, so did the natural appetite for physical intimacy. It was only a matter of time and the young women became pregnant. Adding to the already unfortunate situation, the families of these two young people were at odds with one another. This disputation was due to a history of disagreements between both parties for a number of generations, in so much that, the two teenagers never divulged to their families of their relationship from the beginning. Knowing the acknowledgment would have brought about severe levels of contention.
The weight of the situation was increasingly burdensome upon them. The young man attempted to balance the consequences and still try to keep the truth of the situation from his family. Ultimately, he could not keep the balancing act for very long and he withdrew his support of the young woman, and chose to walk away from the responsibilities of his actions. Now, left virtually alone to deal with the consequences, the young woman found herself lost, confused, and afraid of what was to come.
Fortunately for her, a pair of LDS missionaries knocked upon the door of her familys home. She was uncertain of their message, but at least she found that they offered a listening ear to her plight.
As the missionaries met with her, they continued to teach her the basic principles of the gospel. However, as her physical attributes began to change, her family soon found out the truth of her situation. They were angry and concerned for her, and at the other family with whom they had warred with for so long. The escalation was fierce and words and actions were made that led the missionaries to believe the young mother, or her unborn son may certainly be in danger.
The mission president was consulted. He met with the young girl, and the dramatic decision was made that she would fly to Utah, where the Churches Family Services could assist her. Also in assisting her, she would give the child for adoption, and return to her home in Scotland. This would help appease her family, and help them all to heal.
Imagine if you will, a young, pregnant teenage mother, scared and alone, flying to an unknown place to give birth, and to give away the child.
This young mother acted in enormous faith to come to the United States, and give her baby away for adoption. She never met the parents who would raise her child. She did not know what the future meant for her, or the child. Yet, through her faith, and the faith of many others, that little baby boy she gave away at birth, was born essentially into a home of goodly parents. The boy was raised in the Church, sealed to those adoptive parents, baptized at the age of 8, confirmed a deacon at the age of 12, and served a mission at 19. He has yet to marry, but rather writes blogs about independence and the fact that his existence is a miracle unto itself.
