Road Work Can Teach You Something along with the Change of Season.

I was recently on a road trip and my vision was distracted by nature and the scenery. Although an unsafe practice in driving, it made me realize how grateful I am for fall leaves and snow dusted peaks.

Don’t worry, I returned my focus to the road ahead just in time for my lane to end as I entered a construction zone. Incidentally, this made me ponder upon those huge orange barrels with a little more thought than usual. Normally my desire is to weave through them as if I am some professional driver.

When one drives through those zones and is directed into another lane by barrels, yet seemingly no work is being done, it is a little frustrating. I likened that to life and the way the Lord works in our lives. At times we are forced to change lanes. This may be due to construction ahead, or possibly a dangerous situation. As we pass through those moments we can sometimes see what is going on and can understand the diversion. Other times, it seems as though little or no roadwork is being completed and we have a hard time understanding why we’ve been re-routed. Either way, there is usually a good and wise purpose for the detour.

I’ve been able to change lanes and seasons. Life is very good. Not enough time in the day for everything and still there are many decisions to make and goals to accomplish.

As for the developments in my life, though for a while I didn’t see much work occurring on the other side of those barrels, I just had to a wait a mile or two to see why changing lanes was so important.

I also noticed some new signs on the side of the road in Utah. Something to the effect of "Drowsy Drivers Take Next Exit." They are meant to encourage fatigued drivers to use designated rest areas. Though I'm not normally one to stop at rest stops, on the road of life, they can be a nice sabbatical to the bustle of heavy traffic.
